Silk Painting Workshop with Bethan Hamilton

Join artist Bethan Hamilton for a 3 hour silk painting workshop. Where you will learn how to silk paint using organic mulberry Ahimsa “peace silk”, a non-violent, ethical alternative to conventional silk. Peace silk, is a type of silk produced without harming the silkworms, allowing them to complete their natural life cycle. This method is rooted in ethical practices and is often associated with the values of nonviolence found in Hinduism and Buddhism. This method uses less water and avoids harmful chemicals, significantly reducing the environmental impact compared to conventional silk production. Ahimsa silk is gaining popularity among conscious consumers who value ethical fashion and sustainability.
Overall, ahimsa silk represents a compassionate alternative to conventional silk, aligning with the principles of nonviolence and promomting a more sustainable textile industry.
What You’ll Learn
Introduction to basic silk painting techniques, with plenty of opportunities to practice. – Create 1-2 silk paintings stretched across 6in bamboo hoops using gutta & silk paint. – Decorate 1 pre-prepared tie-dye silk stretched across a 6in bamboo hoop using gutta & sequins. If you have any pre-prepared sketches or photographs that you would like to work from as a reference image then please bring them with you to the workshop, but not essential. Example pieces, books & reference images for creative inspiration will be provided on the day.
About Bethan
Bethan is a visual artist and workshop host who specialises in drawing, printmaking and silk painting. Originally from Greater Manchester, Bethan has lived and worked in West Sussex since 2018. Bethan graduated with a BA (Hons) in Visual Arts from the University of Salford 2008 and then with a Masters in Fine Art: Drawing from Wimbledon College of Art in 2009. Bethan has been a practicing artist for 16 years and has worked with galleries, schools and arts organisations within the UK and Sweden.
Recent exhibitions include; Solstice, The Old Lock Up Gallery (Cromford, UK), Memento Carne, Indelible Fine Art (Brighton, UK), and The Lovely Gallery Open 2025, Anna Lovely Gallery (London, UK.)
