🌲T H E H O L L Y T R E E 🌲

There are many folklores and traditions around the Holly Bush...

🌲Did you know? Holly was once referred to simply as ‘Christmas’, and in pre-Victorian times ‘Christmas trees’ meant holly bushes?

🌲Due to its leaves and berries reflecting light and bringing colour into the dark winter days, it was often brought into houses at this time of year.

🌲We’ve all heard the Carol, ‘The Holly and The Ivy’, right? The holly leaves symbolising Jesus’ Crown of Thorns etc, well, pre-dating that, there was a tradition where a boy wearing a suit of holly leaves and a girl wearing Ivy would be paraded around the village with the idea of bringing nature through the darkest part of the year to re-emerge for another year, bringing hope and fertility.

🌲Holly was also seen as a protector, with trees often planted near houses to offer protection from lightning. European mythology associated holly with thunder gods such as Thor and Taranis. We now know that the spines on holly leaves can act as mini lightning conductors, thereby protecting the tree and other nearby objects!

🌲Although it was seen as a taboo to cut down whole Holly trees (some believed they helped to obstruct witches who were said to run along the tops of hedges), the taking of boughs for decoration, and the coppicing of trees to provide winter fodder, was allowed. Hence our wreaths and garlands still to this day!

Have you got any to add?
